The Taste of Wine in a Restaurant
It can be uncomfortable if you are out on a bussines meeting at a fancy restaurant and you do not know the proper wine to order, it’s even worse if you are out with another friends. Even though you ordering a bottle of good wine while dining out is not all that different than buying from your favourite winery you do have people watching you and that will make the situation more uncomfortable if you do not have at least some kind of knowledge of basic wines.
If there are many people on the table with you, then making a decision about how many bottles will be needed is also sometimes difficult. Remember that one medium sized bottle is enough for three to four people. It also depends on how much they are willing to drink. Ladies usually drink very little, mostly a glass or two even if the meal is dry. If they decide to drink a little more and one bottle is not enough, then immediately offer another bottle.
Don’t limit your choices of wine every time you go out eating in a restaurant. If the decision of choosing wine is entirely laid upon you then openly declare that you want to try something new that day. Even if your partner has tasted that particular brand before, it doesn’t matter. The more wine brands you will try, the more informed you will become. With every visit your confidence level will improve and after a few tries you won’t have any difficulty ordering wine in a restaurant.
Some people also like to take small pocket guides with them. They think that if they have to spend money on wine then they would go for the best one the restaurant has to offer. You can also ask the waiter to bring their special list of wines, or maybe the most special wine for that day. Another thing that you need to consider, which should have been discussed before, is the kind of meal you are going to have to match the taste of wine with it. You can ask the steward that you plan to eat so-and-so meal, so what is their advice on the wine part.
Again, don’t be overwhelmed with all the choices on the list. Just consider what your preference is and order the one that seems the most appropriate.
