As a wine Rioja, it comes from Italian Chianti in form of Spain’s wine version. Rioja is a region in Spain with a long, glorious vinicultural history. Rioja wine comes from that Rioja wine region of Northeastern Spain. Rioja is especially popular for red wine and best-loved type of wine in Spain. It has been well known for long time. The Rioja vineyards were planted even before the traditional bringers of wine, and then Romans moved into the area for expanding in their wineries.

Wine and vineyards have always held a special place in Spaniards’ hearts. They do not produce the most wine because of their standards of quality. The climate and soil profile of their three sub zones influences the quality and character of its grapes. Most Rioja wines are blends of grapes. Rioja is a blended wine not only in geography but also in its grape content. The Tempranillo is also usually blended with Grenache and up to two other locally grown grapes like Mazeulo or Graciano. Some Riojas are even made of almost entirely Grenache grapes.

Usually those wines with a high percentage of Grenache are higher in alcohol, less tannic and less fruity than those with less Grenache. Rioja wines also vary considerably in the style according to how long they age at the winery in oak bottles and in bottles before they are released.
There are seven types of grapes used in making Rioja. These are like Red Grapes Tempranillo (gentle, berry flavor), Garnacha Tinta (peppery), Graciano(blackberry), Mazuelo (tannin). White Grapes are like Viura(tart), Malvasia(nutty), Garnacha Blanca. Four are used for the red variety and three are used for the white variety.

From the Rioja wine liner, the best and popular one is the red Rioja. They are stylistic classic and bold. The tastes of these wines are mostly of their tempranillo roots which provides fresh flavor. There is another fresh and strong and lighter weight wine- the rosé. These wines are particularly produced from Garnacha grapes predominantly which are bright pink. More greenish-yellow than white, Rioja Blanca has a light, fine aroma and flavor. These wines are made primarily with the Viura grape.

Red Rioja wine in its most classic manifestation is a medium-bodied, soft and mellow type of wine with only moderate levels of tannin. This wine has wonderful vanilla aroma and flavor that comes from the barrels in which the wine ages and, depending on how mature the wine is, it can have aged aromas and flavors of dried red fruits.

Cava is mostly a quality and tasteful white wine produced in Northern Spain. This cava wine is produced by a unique technique Known as “method champenoise”, or the method of a secondary fermentation in the bottle. However this white wine is also mostly known as “champan” by the Spanish people. There was a dispute regarding the name of this white wine between Spanish and French. But after legal battles with the French, it was decided that the name of the wine could only be applied to wines made in the area. So after that the name Cava was decided upon the Champagne area of France.

The wine is bottled with a temporary cork and stored in a horizontal position after the first fermentation. To make the Cava wine classy it must be in contact with the lees for a minimum of 9 months but this can often be as long as 2 years. At the end of this period comes the disgorgement process when the wine is cleaned of the yeast sediment by removing the cork, any liquid lost at this time is replaced by wine of the year either sweet or dry depending on the preference of the producer. The final cork is then put in and the wine goes for labeling and dispatch. The production of Cava Wines is rigorously controlled by the Consell Regulador del Cava to ensure that the resulting sparkling wines are of the highest quality. The main grapes used are Macabeu, xarello, Parellada and more recently some Chardonny varieties.

Cava is the Catalan for cave and it is from this area that most of these delightful bubbly Spanish wines are produced. However Cava wines are unique because unlike other “Denominacion de Origen” regions in Spain it is not restricted to one particular demarcated area, and in addition to Catalyuna it is also produced in D.O. Rioja, D.O. Navarra and D.O. Aragon. That said however some 95% of Cava wines comes form the D.O. Penedes in the region of Catalunya.

However cava wines have a huge reputation and recognition worldwide today because of their quality and sparkling wineries which are mostly suitable for many occasions and satisfying most paletes. They come in dry, sweet and brut varieties and represent very good value for money.
